A New Challenger Appears! The Epic Games Store

Just a week ago, I was tipped off about the existence of a digital game store called the Epic Games Store, featuring curated PC games for both Windows and Mac. As a long-time fan of Steam, I was kind of skeptical about the quality of games released on the Epic Games Store, but nonetheless, I’ll give them a fair chance to see if they do provide a better deal to indie developers than their competitors.

In this review, I will be covering what Epic Games has to offer as a platform designed to support developers and the gaming community at large. As mentioned in its FAQ page, out of every purchase, developers will receive 88% of the profits generated from selling their games. And I have to admit, it’s a lot easier to set up than the Steam client.

Speedrunning Charity Events: A Step Forward for Gaming

For the longest time, video games were associated with the stigma of being for loners who’d rather sit at home by themselves and avoid interacting with society. The lack of exercise and poor dieting habits didn’t help either.

While some gamers may act like this, an event that has been taking place since the 2010s is proving otherwise on top of showing the generous nature of the gaming community to the public.

Depending on the year or season, this event goes by two names: ADGQ/Awesome Games Done Quick and SDGQ/ Summer Games Done Quick, but in this article, we’ll refer to both as AGDQ to avoid giving ourselves a headache.

Why Games Get Stuck in Development Hell

Most games are released in a few years tops, assuming they are backed by a competent team of developers; this includes the programmers, designers, voice actors, storytellers, and marketers.

That may not be the case if the game doesn’t reach its crowdfunding goals or fails to generate any interest from gamers like us, which means it’s harder to get noticed by a publisher.

The biggest known obstacle to game development is poor management, shown by constantly shifting priorities and little to no progress made on the core gameplay, though a lack of resources poses another problem in of itself.

Persona 5: Are the Phantom Thieves Just?

What Does it Mean to Stay on the Path of Justice?

When I heard Persona 5 Royal was coming out, I couldn’t wait to watch the new trailers for this extended remake of the original Persona 5. And for the record, I’m a huge fan of Persona 5. After logging over 100 hours into the game, I grew attached to the Phantom Thieves, as if I was one of them, infiltrating palaces to steal the distorted desires of rotten adults.

The Rise of Virtual Reality Gaming

In the context of video games, virtual reality (VR) projects a simulated environment in front of the player. Since its inception, virtual reality has taken the gaming community by force, changing the way people become immersed in their games. VR technology replaces the player’s field of view with an artificial world derived from the game’s setting.

Players that put on their headsets can explore their surroundings or interact with objects, guided by visual and sensory feedback. VR gear can be hooked up to a PC setup or a handheld controller, though some gadgets are strapped onto haptic gloves. Though the future of gaming is headed towards VR, the wearable devices themselves aren’t without their drawbacks.
